​This scene constitutes a kind of clue putting the viewer on the path of resolving the plot; since the beginning of the film, we have no doubt that Grace's husband died and will never come back, someone do not return from war after so many years in such a sudden and uncertain way. If the couple's encounter has become possible, it's because Grace is dead, except that she does not know it yet.

This plot and this vague clue are suggested in a visual way, by the blurring effect of the surrounding fog, perceived in the long shots as a simple frightening atmosphere, but as an immaterial place during close shots, which does not show where exactly the characters are located. It's almost like they're in limbo.

But the director took care to preserve the doubt by camouflaging these clues by a game of very contrasting shots / countershots between the two protagonists, which allows to more strenuously highlight the relieved and (apparently) alive character of Grace. Our attention is distracted, but the clues are all there. It is as if the young woman, while taking her husband in the arms, sought to cover the non-existence of her husband with her apparent existence.
